South African president resigns
South African President Jacob Zuma resigned Wednesday under pressure from politicians within his own party. The African National Congress (ANC), once the party of Nelson Mandela, called for Zuma to step down amid sweeping accusations of corruption. The president said in a speech Wednesday he agreed to leave office immediately. The ANC planned to hold a vote of no confidence in the South African Parliament Thursday if Zuma did not respond to its demands for his resignation.
