Simone Biles joins list of gymnast doctor’s accusers
Gymnast Simone Biles, who won five medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics, became the latest athlete to accuse doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse when she took to Twitter on Monday to detail her experience. Nassar was sentenced in December to 60 years in federal prison for possessing child pornography. He faces another 40 to 125 years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting seven girls. His victims include six-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman, 2012 all-around champion Gabby Douglas, and two-time Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney. Nassar spent more than two decades as a physician for USA Gymnastics and also worked at Michigan State University, where some of the abuse took place. Dozens of women and girls are expected to testify this week during a four-day sentencing hearing in Lansing, Mich. The judge is expected to issue a ruling Friday. Like other Nassar victims, Biles said the doctor disguised his abuse as part of a legitimate treatment. Biles and others have called for an investigation into how Nassar’s abuse could go undetected for so long. “We need to make sure something like this never happens again,” Biles said.
