Shooting claims lives at California festival

Three people, including a 6-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, died in a mass shooting Sunday at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California. Twelve others were injured. A gunman opened fire at about 5:30 p.m. as the festival was winding down. Police responded in less than a minute and killed the suspect. Some witnesses said they saw a second suspect, and a manhunt continued late into Monday.

Was the festival site secure? The popular three-day festival attracts more than 100,000 people to Gilroy, Calif., annually. The event had tight security, including metal detectors, but the shooter, identified as 19-year-old Santino William Legan, bypassed the checkpoints by cutting through a fence bordering a parking lot next to a creek, Gilroy Police Chief Scott Smithee said. Singer Jack van Breen for the band TinMan, which was performing when the shooting began, said he heard someone shout, “Why are you doing this?” and the reply, “Because I’m really angry.”

Pray for: The Romero family, whose 6-year-old, Stephen, died. Alberto Romero told NBC News that his son went to the festival with his mother and grandmother, who were both injured in the shooting. “My son had his whole life to live and he was only 6,” Romero said. “That’s all I can say.”
