Attackers fire on Jerusalem bus stop, killing six

An Israeli soldier and civilians on Monday morning shot and killed two terrorists who opened fire at a bus stop on the outskirts of Israel’s capital city, according to the Israeli police. The shooters killed six people—five men and one woman—according to the national ambulance service. The attackers injured at least 12 other people.

Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the site Monday. During the visit, Ben-Gvir called on Israeli citizens to arm themselves. He also criticized Israel’s Supreme Court for ruling Sunday that Israel was not feeding Palestinian prisoners enough. He said that tough prison conditions were a deterrent to other potential terrorists.

Some media reports have described the terrorists as Palestinian. The Hamas terrorist group did not take responsibility for the attack but did issue a statement welcoming the shooting. Officials did not release details about the attackers.

What are international leaders saying? French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack and said only a political solution would restore stability in the region. He has been a vocal advocate for establishing a Palestinian state. Leaders from Italy, Poland, and Germany also offered condolences to the victims and their families. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump over the weekend continued trying to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. He said on Sunday that Israel had accepted his terms and he called on Hamas to do the same.
