Shooter kills student at Portland high school

Police in a Portland, Ore., suburb say a gunman shot and killed a high school student this morning, shortly after classes began on what was supposed to be the second-to-last day of school.

Officials have not released any information about the student or identified the killer, who also died. Investigators would not say whether the gunman shot himself, only that he was dead when first responders arrived at Reynolds High School in Troutdale shortly after 8 a.m. They placed the school on lockdown briefly before evacuating students and reuniting them with their parents in a nearby parking lot.

“This is a very tragic day, one that I hoped would never ever be part of my experience,” Reynolds School District Superintendent Linda Florence told parents, students, and media who gathered outside the school waiting for more information.

Students interviewed after they left the building suggested the attack might have involved several shooters, but police have not released any information about other suspects.

Today’s shooting comes just five days after a gunman killed one and injured two students at Seattle Pacific University, a Christian college in Seattle. The student who died, 19-year-old Paul Lee, was from Portland.

One mother who waited today with other parents outside Reynolds High School to pick up her daughter fretted over the all-to-common shooting incidents.

“I thank God that she’s safe,” said Mandy Johnson, who has three younger children. “I don’t want to send my kids to school anymore.”
