Severe storms hammer South and Midwest

Icy weather, tornadoes, and flooding led to 11 deaths throughout the South and Midwest over the weekend. Tens of thousands of people were without electrical power on Sunday following punishing storms.

Where did the storms hit the hardest? The National Weather Service recorded at least four separate tornadoes, in Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, and South Carolina over the weekend. Three people died in Louisiana and three in Alabama during high wind conditions. Wisconsin saw millions of dollars of damage from wind and floods, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said one man died after floodwaters swept him away. Icy roads caused accidents and complicated travel in several states, killing at least two first responders in Texas, a traveler in Iowa, and canceling 1,200 flights out of Chicago’s two airports.
