Several Muslims killed as Jerusalem protests turn violent

UPDATE: Three Israelis from a West Bank settlement died Friday after being stabbed by a Palestinian attacker wielding a knife. The attacker broke into a houes in Halamish, northwest of Ramallah, and stabbed two women, one in her 70s and another in her 60s, and a man in his 30s. The attacker reportedly was shot, wounded, and taken to a hospital. The attack came at the end of a violent day in Israel and the West Bank. After meeting with senior Palestinian officials, President Mahmoud Abbas said the Palestinian leadership will "freeze contacts" with Israel "on all levels."

OUR EARLIER REPORT (12:50 p.m.): Israeli security forces set up checkpoints around Jerusalem on Friday after protests over access to a Muslim shrine erupted in the streets. Muslims began throwing rocks at police after massing outside the shrine for Friday prayers to protest Israel’s installation of metal detectors at the site. Police shot and killed two Muslim youth, one 17 and the other 24, and another died of unspecified wounds sustained during a protest in the West Bank. Israel installed the metal detectors at the site, which houses both the Jewish Temple Mount and the Muslim Noble Sanctuary, after three Arab-Israeli attackers killed two police officers there last week. Officials say the metal detectors are necessary to prevent future attacks. Muslim leaders vow to fight any restrictions to sites they consider holy. About 41 protesters suffered injuries from live fire, rubber bullets, and beatings, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent. Area hospitals treated another 150 for tear gas inhalation. In a phone call with U.S. presidential adviser Jared Kushner, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned the “extremely dangerous” situation could spin out of control.
