40 killed in Senegal bus crash

A bus with a punctured tire veered into another bus on Senegal’s National Road No. 1 on Sunday, killing 40 people and wounding dozens more. President Macky Sall declared a three-day mourning period to begin on Monday. He promised to hold a government council to discuss road safety measures.

How common are crashes like this one? Although not usually this severe, car wrecks in Senegal are routine. Poor road conditions, low-quality vehicles, and reckless drivers make the country’s roads dangerous. In 2017, a similar bus wreck killed 25 people.
