Senate confirms Ben Carson as housing secretary
Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has won confirmation to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, earning support from six Democrats and one independent, along with the entire 51-member Republican caucus. Despite initial concerns about Carson’s lack of experience with issues the department regulates, senators who supported him said they liked his pledges to enforce fair housing requirements and address lead hazards in the nation’s public housing developments. Carson grew up in public housing in inner-city Detroit and often touts his life story as proof hard work can break the cycle of poverty. He has yet to offer any specifics about his plans for the department or housing policy. With Carson’s vote, the Senate has confirmed 17 of President Donald Trump’s 22 Cabinet nominees.
