Security guard opens up about Las Vegas shooting

Jesus Campos, the Mandalay Bay security guard shot by Las Vegas attacker Stephen Paddock in the hallway outside Paddock’s hotel room, has broken his silence in an interview with television talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. The Las Vegas Review-Journal obtained excerpts of the interview, in which Campos described how he went to the 32nd floor of the hotel the night of Oct. 1 to check on a door left ajar near Paddock’s room. He found the stairwell door blocked and called for a hotel engineer to look at it. After taking a different route, he arrived outside Paddock’s room and was shot in the leg. He reported the shots and alerted maintenance worker Stephen Shuck, who had arrived to look at the blocked door. “He yelled at me, and within milliseconds, if he didn’t say that, I would have got hit,” said Shuck, who was interviewed with Campos. “I wasn’t fully in cover, and [shots] were passing behind my head and I could feel the pressure.” After having initial disagreements about the timeline of the shooting, hotel and police officials have agreed Campos was shot in the minute before Paddock opened fire on an outdoor music festival from his hotel room, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds more. Investigators still have not nailed down Paddock’s motive for the shooting. Media questioned what happened to Campos when he canceled several scheduled interviews last week. He indicated in his interview with DeGeneres, set to air Wednesday, that it would be his only appearance to discuss the shooting.
