Search for quake survivors continues, but not at collapsed school
A Mexican navy official on Thursday confirmed all the children from a school that collapsed during Tuesday’s earthquake have been accounted for, abruptly ending the search for a young girl reportedly still trapped beneath the debris. “We have done an accounting with school officials and we are certain that all the children either died, unfortunately, are in hospitals, or are safe at home,” said Navy Assistant Secretary Angel Enrique Sarmiento. Search teams rescued 11 children at the Enrique Rebasamen school, where 25 people died, including 19 children and six adults, according to Sarmiento. One adult from the school remains missing. By Thursday night, the death toll from the 7.1 magnitude earthquake had risen to 286 people, more than half of them in Mexico City. The municipal government said 60 people have been rescued as efforts to find survivors continue. Federal civil defense director Luis Felipe Puente said bulldozers have already started to clear away some of the debris from damaged buildings.
