Russian forces storm Ukraine steel mill
After a two-week siege, Russians began attacking the steel mill that contains the last pocket of soldiers — and some civilians—in Mariupol, Ukraine, on Tuesday. About 127 evacuees from the plant made it safely to a reception center in Zaporizhzhia over the weekend, but a few hundred still remain, the Ukrainian deputy prime minister said. It is unclear how many fighters are left in Mariupol, but the Russians said there were about 2,000 in recent weeks and reported 500 wounded.
How is the battle in the east going? Russia bombed a chemical plant in the eastern city of Avdiivka just as people were getting off shift, killing at least 10, the Donetsk regional governor said. But so far, Russia seems to have only taken several small towns in eastern Ukraine with no large victories. Strikes in Lviv knocked out power in parts of the western city, which has been a gateway for NATO supplies and a haven for those displaced. The European Union has said it plans more sanctions on Russia’s oil industry, banks, and other businesses.
