Russian drone strikes hit port near Ukraine-Romania border
Russian drones hit the Ukranian port city of Izmail on Wednesday, causing damage and fire at grain export facilities. Izmail is a port on the Danube River that forms part of the Ukraine-Romania border. The bombing of Izmail is the latest in a series of strikes Russia has made on Ukrainian ports since scrapping a wartime agreement that had protected shipments of grain through the Black Sea.
What is Ukraine’s response to the bombings? Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strikes an attack on global food security. Ukraine is one of the world’s top grain exporters. Danube River ports such as Izmail have become Ukraine’s main remaining route to ship grain out since Russia ended the deal. Three Ukrainian ports along the Danube have been in operation.
