A Russian military helicopter violated Poland’s airspace for nearly one minute on Wednesday morning, according to a statement from Poland’s military. An Mi-8 helicopter belonging to the Russian Armed Forces illegally penetrated more than 300 meters inside Polish airspace and remained for about 42 seconds, Poland’s military reported. Officials viewed the incident as Russia testing the readiness of Polish air defenses.

Why does a seconds-long airspace violation matter? Polish officials noted repeated violations from Russia, with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz calling attention to an earlier flyby the previous day. Russia routinely tests NATO's eastern flank, and Polish fighters intercepted a Russian Il-20 about 40 km from the Polish coast over the Baltic Sea, Kosiniak-Kamysz reported Tuesday. These incidents aren't isolated and are part of a pressure campaign from Moscow, he added.

The latest violations also came during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Russia’s yearslong invasion of Ukraine remained heavily discussed. Poland planned to fully support Ukraine amid possible ceasefire talks with Russia, Polish Foreign Affairs Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told reporters on Tuesday. Sikorski also spoke out against Russian attacks on Ukraine just a mile from Poland’s border. Russia will strike Ukraine, but Polish windows will shake, and Polish residents are forced to take refuge in shelters because of the air-raid alarms, he said.

What has Russia said about the prospect of peace with Ukraine? Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday that Russia remained open to peace talks with Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Moscow with guaranteed security, Peskov said.

What has Ukraine said about a peace deal? Zelenskyy, while attending the UNGA in New York, voiced hope that American officials could coax Russia to the negotiation table. President Donald Trump vowed to do all he could to help end the war, and he can organize the trilateral meeting to parse through sensitive issues and end the war, Zelenskyy said.
