Russia barrages Ukrainian infrastructure on Christmas Day
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday condemned a Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy system and cities, calling it inhumane. Moscow on Wednesday launched more than 180 missiles and drones, according to Ukraine’s air force, and cut power to people across the country. Ukrainian forces shot down a majority of the missiles and drones, though some regional officials reported civilian injuries and at least one death. This was the 13th major attack on Ukraine’s energy sector this year, according to private Ukrainian energy company DTEK.
How have world leaders responded? U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday denounced the attack and directed the Department of Defense to continue delivering weapons to Ukraine. Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who is President-elect Donald Trump’s selection for special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, also criticized the assault. The United States is determined to bring peace to the region, he said.
