Royal baby boy born in London

Watch out William—there’s a new prince in town.

Weighing in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces, the son of Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate entered the world at 4:24 p.m. on Monday at Saint Mary’s Hospital in central London. It’s the same hospital where Princess Diana gave birth to William.

The palace has not yet released a name for the infant who will become third in line for the British throne (after his grandfather, Prince Charles, and his father), but we do know this: The baby is expected to become the head of state in 16 countries, including Britain, Australia, and Canada, and possibly the head of the Commonwealth, which covers 54 nations. The child also will eventually become Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

But for now, the royal couple and their newborn are expected to spend much of their time in renovated quarters at Kensington Palace, where William and the baby’s uncle, Harry, also spent much of their childhood.

Kate checked into a private wing at St. Mary’s early Monday morning, as those watching the live video feeds surely know (the #GreatKateWait is finally over). According to the Associated Press, new dad William spent the long hours of labor at his wife’s bedside—unlike his grandfather, who, according to Vanity Fair, was enjoying a game of squash when Prince Charles came into the world.

Royal officials say Kate and William plan to give their child as normal an upbringing as possible, which may be challenging considering the couple’s celebrity status at home and around the world.
