Riots break out near Paris after death of 17-year-old
Police arrested about 150 people around the country during riots Tuesday and Wednesday. People took to the streets to protest the shooting death of a 17-year-old during a police traffic stop earlier in the day. French citizens burned more than forty cars and even a few buildings during their revolt. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said thousands of police officers have been deployed to handle the riots. The police officer suspected of shooting the teenager on Tuesday has been detained and faces potential manslaughter charges, according to the prosecutor’s office.
How does this riot compare to other French protests in recent history? Less than two months ago, millions of people lined the streets of France in protest of President Emmanuel Macron’s attempt to raise the minimum age at which a person can receive a pension. In May, police violently clashed with protesters while trade union leaders organized general strikes, rocking the country's infrastructure.
