Rescuers comb through condo rubble for survivors

Family members of missing residents watched on Monday as crews worked atop a precarious pile of concrete, steel, and household items in Surfside, Fla. About 150 people remain unaccounted for after a 12-story condominium building collapsed on Thursday. The intense effort includes firefighters, sniffer dogs, and search experts using radar and sonar devices—all working around the clock in 12-hour shifts.

Is there any hope of finding people alive? Search expert Ricardo Aizenman said rescuers had the best chances of reaching survivors in the first 72 hours after the collapse. But there could still be survivors, especially since light rain might have provided people trapped in the rubble with water. “There are still chances,” he said. “We have to keep up the high hopes.”

Dig deeper: Read more from the Associated Press about the structural repairs the building needed before it collapsed.
