Rebel forces attack village in Sudan, killing at least 100 people
The UN on Thursday said that at least 35 children were among those killed in the village of Wad Al-Noura in central Sudan. Sudan’s army said the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces attacked the village on Wednesday and killed more than 100 people. Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan vowed to retaliate against the RSF, according to state media.
How long has the conflict in Sudan been going on? Civil war broke out in Sudan in April 2023 as the leaders of the RSF and Sudanese Army fought for control. The two leaders previously worked together in 2021 to orchestrate a coup. So far, more than 15,000 people have been killed, and more than 8 million are displaced, according to the Council on Foreign Relations. The World Food Programme on Thursday expanded its emergency food and nutrition assistance to Sudan. The UN agency plans to provide food to about 5 million more people in the war-torn nation by the end of the year.
