Rare New Jersey–based earthquake rattles New York City

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake sent tremors across New Jersey and into New York on Friday morning, according to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the shock centering near Whitehouse Station, N.J., hitting just before 10:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Social media users reported feeling the shake all the way from Philadelphia, Pa., down to Washington, D.C. No major damage had been reported at the time of this writing, but this is a developing story. Hochul said the public will be updated on the earthquake throughout the day. New York City experienced a comparable 5.0 magnitude quake in 1884.
