Rallies around the world remember George Floyd’s death
Gunfire erupted on Tuesday in Minneapolis hours before the start of a festival celebrating progress toward racial justice. About 30 shots rang out near the site where, on May 25 of last year, Officer Derek Chauvin was videoed restraining George Floyd, who later died. A jury last month convicted Chauvin of murder.
Was anyone hurt in the shooting? One person who sought help at a local hospital is believed to have been wounded. Police described the shooting as an “evolving incident” and did not give any information about what caused it. Gun violence is on the rise in Minneapolis and other major cities as police departments struggle to recruit and retain officers amid widespread anti-police sentiments. By midafternoon on Tuesday, preparation for the family-friendly festival at the site where Floyd encountered police had resumed. Rallies on Tuesday in New York, Los Angeles, and several European cities also commemorated Floyd’s death, and members of his family met with President Joe Biden at the White House.
