Protests, unrest continue in St. Louis

Protesters are marching in St. Louis for the fourth day in a row following the acquittal Friday of a white police officer in an African-American man’s shooting death. “The days have been calm and the nights have been destructive,” Mayor Lyda Krewson said at a news conference Monday morning. The behavior she described is similar to that seen in protests in nearby Ferguson, Mo., after the 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown, which launched the Black Lives Matter movement into the national spotlight. On Saturday night, vandals caused extensive damage to businesses in the Delmar Loop, an area popular because of its nightlife and cultural attractions, including restaurants, shops, and music venues. Marches took place Sunday throughout the city, including at two shopping malls in affluent neighborhoods. Police arrested more than 80 people Sunday night as about 100 protesters who refused to disperse marched toward downtown, breaking some windows and overturning planters.
