Pop star Taylor Swift announces engagement to NFL’s Travis Kelce

The award-winning singer Taylor Swift released a joint social media post with Chiefs' football tight end Travis Kelce on Tuesday, announcing their engagement after about two years of dating. Swift quipped, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” in the post, which featured images of the couple surrounded by flowers in a wooded garden area. One photo showed Kelce kneeling before Swift, while another showed a large diamond ring, which commentators identified as an elongated cushion-cut diamond in yellow gold.

The pair started dating in mid-2023, months after Swift’s break with her previous boyfriend of six years, British actor Joe Alwin. Both the National Football League and the Chiefs football team released statements celebrating the engagement.

How are people reacting? The engagement sparked a flurry of reactions from public figures, brands, and politicians. President Donald Trump wished the couple luck after being informed of their engagement while taking questions at a Tuesday cabinet meeting. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, the U.S. Open Tennis Championship, and Colorado Gov. Jared Polis also released statements celebrating the celebrity engagement. Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins wrote that she hopes Swift’s engagement inspires young women to see the joy and purpose in marriage. Kansas City’s historic Union Station planned to celebrate the engagement with a special light display on Tuesday night. Krispy Kreme celebrated the engagement with free glazed doughnuts for customers between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and iHeartRadio invited listeners to stream the “Taylor and Travis Wedding Playlist.”

The couple’s engagement announcement came more than a week after Swift appeared on Kelce’s New Heights podcast and announced the anticipated release of her newest album.
