Police shooting sparks protests in Louisiana
Anger at police has boiled over in Baton Rouge, La., after the shooting of a CD salesman was caught on video. Alton Sterling, 37, died from multiple gunshot wounds after an encounter with police at his stand outside a convenience store early Tuesday morning. Police were responding to an anonymous report that Sterling had threatened someone with a gun. In the cellphone video, someone can be heard shouting, “He’s got a gun!” before shooting breaks out. The police and the U.S. Department of Justice are investigating the incident. Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie Jr. said Sterling was armed, but questions remain about what happened before his death. Community leaders say the shooting was unjustified. “Mr. Sterling was not reaching for a weapon. He looks like a man that was actually fighting for his life,” said state Rep. Edmond Jordan, an attorney for Sterling’s family. Protesters gathered outside the convenience store Tuesday.
