Police release Orlando 911 transcripts
Police and the FBI released more details today about what happened in Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla, the night of the June 12 mass shooting. Attacker Omar Mateen spoke three times with a 911 dispatcher. Partial transcripts of those calls show Mateen identified himself as an Islamic soldier and said the United States needed to stop bombing Iraq and Syria. At a news conference today, local police described their response to the shooting, saying they arrived on the scene minutes after the attack began around 2 a.m. Mateen stopped shooting and barricaded himself inside a bathroom for three hours, Orlando police Chief John Mina said. Around 4:30 a.m., some victims who escaped said Mateen had threatened to put explosive vests on hostages within 15 minutes. At 5:02 a.m., a SWAT team in an armored vehicle broke through a wall of the building and exchanged fire with Mateen, killing him. Mina said the death toll could have been much worse if not for the prompt police response.
