Police hold suspect for healthcare CEO’s murder in NYC
Authorities picked up a man near Altoona, Penn. for questioning related to the fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week. Luigi Mangione was arrested and held on initial charges including forgery, according to a released criminal complaint. He was later charged with murder in New York, wire services reported. An unknown attacker fatally shot Thompson Wednesday morning outside a conference venue in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood. The attacker fled on foot, then on an electric bike into Central Park. New York Police Department officials released photos of the suspected shooter last week and over the weekend, offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Altoona is more than 200 miles from the site of the shooting.
How was the suspect found? Customers of a McDonalds restaurant said the now-detained man at the restaurant seemed suspicious and called police, according to a report from ABC’s New York affiliate. Authorities found a gun similar to the one used in the attack on Thompson, along with a silencer and a fake ID, NBC added. NYPD dispatched detectives to the central Pennsylvania town where the suspect is being questioned. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is also expected to speak on the development Monday afternoon, the AP added.
