Plane crash in Nepal kills at least 50

At least 50 people died when a Bangladeshi plane with 67 passengers and four crew members crashed Monday as it landed in Nepal, officials said. The twin-propeller Bombardier Dash 8, operated by US–Bangla Airlines, took off from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Witnesses said the plane crashed near the runway at the Kathmandu, Nepal, airport and burst into flames. Dozens of firefighters and rescue officials worked to assist the victims at the site of the crash. “We have recovered 50 dead bodies so far,” Bangladeshi army spokesman Gokul Bandar said. The country has yet to release an official death toll. Nitin Keyal, who was about to board another flight at the airport, said he witnessed the crash. “It was flying very low,” Keyal said of the plane. “You could tell it wasn’t a normal landing.” Airline spokesman Kamrul Islam identified 32 of the passengers as Bangladeshi nationals, 33 as Nepalese, and two others from China and the Maldives.
