Pistorius sentenced to six years for girlfriend’s murder
A South African judge sentenced former Olympian Oscar Pistorius to six years in prison for shooting his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013. Prosecutors had asked for a 15-year term. In issuing her ruling, the judge said she did not think a long prison sentence would serve justice, especially since Pistorius had shown himself to be “a good candidate for rehabilitation.” Prosecutors might appeal the ruling, but Pistorius’ lawyers said they would not. This is the second time Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa has sentenced the double-amputee for Steenkamp’s killing. In 2014, Masipa found him guilty of manslaughter and sentenced him to five years in prison, of which he served one. The country’s highest appeals court upgraded the sentence to murder and sent the case back to Masipa for a new sentence.
