Philippine police kill 32 people in single drug raid
Police officers in the Philippines killed 32 people in a series of anti-drug raids across the country’s northern region on Tuesday. Senior police superintendent Romeo Caramat said the police carried out 66 operations in parts of Bulacan province, arresting 107 suspects. Authorities in the operation seized weapons, about 786 grams of marijuana, and more than 200 grams of methamphetamine. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office in June 2016 and promised to wage a war on drugs. Since the start of his crackdown, police records show more than 3,200 alleged drug offenders have been killed in police operations. More than 2,000 died in drug-related homicides, including attacks by masked gunmen. Human rights groups have accused the president, who remains widely popular, of crimes against humanity.
