Phil declares six more weeks of winter
Winter-weary Americans who rely on a rodent for their weather forecast are set for six more weeks of disappointment. Punxsutawney Phil, the forecasting groundhog, emerged from his burrow this morning and declared Spring would not come early this year. It’s a common theme: According to records dating back to 1887, Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter 103 times. Thousands trek to Pennsylvania to watch the Groundhog Day pronouncement in person, gathering about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh the night before. Shortly after this morning’s sun rose over the frosty horizon, members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle read Phil’s prediction: “It’s mighty cold weather, you’ve been braving. Is it more winter or is it spring that you’re craving? Since you’ve been up all night and starting to tottle, I, Punxsutawney Phil, shall not dawdle. My faithful followers, I could clearly see a beautiful, perfect shadow of me. Six more weeks of winter, it shall be!”
