Palestinian prime minister submits resignation

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh and his government. During a press conference, Shtayyeh said the next government would need to oversee possible reforms and potentially govern Gaza following the war. Shtayyeh is expected to remain the caretaker until his successor is chosen.

Who wants the Palestinian Authority to oversee Gaza? The United States has called for the government to be placed in control of Gaza once the war with Israel concludes. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in January met with Abbas to discuss reforms that could strengthen the Palestinian Authority. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week released a document titled “The Day After Hamas Principles” that outlined his plan for Gaza after the war. In the document, Netanyahu called for Israeli-appointed individuals to govern Gaza instead of the Palestinian Authority.
