Pakistani prime minister faces corruption charges
The Pakistani Supreme Court began hearings Monday to decide whether Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif can keep his job. Last year’s Panama Papers scandal revealed that dozens of world leaders hid money in offshore accounts to avoid taxes and conceal corruption proceeds. Sharif’s name did not appear in the documents, but his three adult children did. Investigators released a 254-page report last week accusing family members of forgery and hiding real estate holdings that far exceed their stated income. Sharif says political enemies have trumped up the charges. The family’s defense hangs on a 2006 document Sharif’s daughter produced to show she did not own a London property. But the document was typed in Calibri, a font that didn’t come out until the following year.
