Orlando shooter’s wife stands trial

Jury selection began Thursday in the trial of the widow of the gunman who killed 49 people in a shooting spree in an Orlando nightclub in June 2016. Police responding to the shooting at the Pulse nightclub killed suspect Omar Mateen, and now his wife, Noor Salman, is charged with obstruction of justice and aiding the support of a foreign terrorist organization. Prosecutors say Salman knew about the attack in advance, a claim she denies. A nurse and psychologist who examined Salman said her husband abused her and she was afraid to ask him about his plans, according to court documents. Mateen called 911 and pledged allegiance to Islamic State (ISIS) during the attack. U.S. District Judge Paul G. Byron began questioning jurors Thursday morning. The trial could take five weeks after jury selection, the judge said.
