OpenAI launched a new artificial intelligence system on Thursday, described as the company’s smartest and most capable model yet. The company described GPT-5 as having a significant boost in intelligence compared with its previous AI models, allowing enhanced performance across coding, writing, and visual perception. The most important feature of GPT-5 is its real-world utility and mass accessibility and affordability, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Thursday.
How is it smarter? GPT‑5 runs on a unified system that allows it to differentiate between questions that have quick answers and ones that require more time and thought. The new model can be used to create aesthetic and responsive websites, apps, and games in just one prompt, OpenAI said. GPT-5 is OpenAI’s strongest coding model capable of complex front-end generation and debugging larger repositories of software, the company explained.
Developers also made significant progress in guarding against what are called “program hallucinations.” That’s the term used to describe the error created when an AI model can't answer a question, but tries to anyway by giving users incorrect information. The company went on to characterize GPT-5 as the most capable writing program yet, able to help steer users through vague ideas into compelling writing with literary depth and rhythm.
GPT-5 is something billions of people will benefit from, and OpenAI will continue to release smarter AI models, Altman added. He also thanked various tech partners he said made the new model possible, including Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle, Google, and Coreweave.
