One dead in Kentucky high school shooting
UPDATE: A 15-year-old boy accused of shooting up a Kentucky high school will face murder charges, Gov. Matt Bevin said Tuesday. The death toll from the early morning attack rose to two by afternoon, with 17 others injured. Of those, 14 have gunshot wounds, Bevin told reporters. One victim, a girl, died at the scene. A boy later died at a hospital. All victims appear to be students. Investigators confirmed the shooter used a handgun in the attack but have released little other information, including what might have prompted the carnage.
OUR EARLIER REPORT (11:45 a.m.): One person died and others were wounded in a shooting at a Kentucky high school Tuesday morning. Police said they have the suspected shooter in custody. Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin called the shooting at Marshall County High School “a tremendous tragedy” and said it was unbelievable something like that could happen in such a small, close-knit community. The southwest Kentucky county has a population of a little more than 31,000 people. A nearby business owner said about 100 students ran from the school building when the shooting broke out. Authorities evacuated the high school and took the students by bus to a nearby middle school to meet their parents. Authorities have not released any further information about the shooter or victims.
