One dead, 16 injured in Tuskegee University shooting
An on-campus shooting early Sunday morning at Tuskegee University in eastern Alabama killed at least one person and injured at least 16 more, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said in a statement. A dozen people were injured by gunfire and transported to area hospitals, while the remaining four were injured over the course of the incident, the agency clarified. The 18-year-old who died at the scene was not a Tuskegee student but some of the injured were, the university confirmed.
Who was the shooter? Police arrested Jaquez Myrick, 25, on Sunday as a suspect in the shooting. The alleged shooter was found leaving the scene with a handgun that had a machine gun conversion device, authorities said in a Monday statement. The 25-year-old was federally charged for possessing a machine gun.
What prompted the shooting? Authorities have not revealed the motivation for the shooting. People started shooting around 1 a.m., and it was hard to get emergency vehicles through the crowds, Tuskegee Police Chief Patrick Mardis told a local news outlet. Tuskegee saw an influx of visitors over the weekend to celebrate the historically black school’s 100th Homecoming on Saturday. The school canceled all classes until Wednesday.
