Obama tries to calm NATO fears over Trump election
President Barack Obama began his final, official foreign trip this week in Greece. The president assured Greek leaders that U.S. support for NATO would not change in the coming years, despite the transition to a very different administration. Although he didn’t mention President-elect Donald Trump by name, Obama’s assurances were designed to calm unease sparked by Trump’s repeated campaign comments about NATO members not pulling their weight. That has to change if U.S. allies want continued American participation in the alliance, Trump has said. Obama also assured Greek leaders he had confidence Trump “will continue on the same path” of support for the island nation amid its economic hardships and migrant crisis. Obama will travel to Germany tomorrow and then on to Peru for an Asian economic summit.
