North, South Korea agree to joint Olympic team

South Korea on Wednesday said it will form its first joint Olympic team with North Korea. The two nations reached the agreement during talks earlier in the day in the border village of Panmunjom. Seoul’s Unification Ministry said the countries would march together under a unification flag during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, South Korea, next month. The countries also agreed to a joint women’s ice hockey team. The Unification Ministry said it will consult with the International Olympic Committee, which has to approve the new measures. Earlier this month, North Korea agreed to the South’s invitation to improve relations by participating in the Winter Olympics. North Korea will send a 230-member cheering squad and said it will have a delegation at the Paralympics in March.
