North Korea’s latest nuclear test sets region on edge
North Korea claims it detonated another nuclear bomb yesterday, boasting it has finally figured out how to miniaturize the deadly technology to fit on the tip of a long-range ballistic missile. Although some analysts are skeptical about the claim, world leaders are taking it seriously. U.S. President Barack Obama condemned the test, which caused a magnitude-5 earthquake near North Korea’s northeastern nuclear test site. Obama said the United States would never accept the North as a nuclear nation. Even China, one of the North’s few allies, condemned the country’s continued push for nuclear weapons. But international reprimands and strict sanctions have so far had no effect on North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, who has pushed to expand the country’s military might ever since he took over from his father in 2011.
