New Zimbabwean president maintains political status quo

Zimbabwe’s new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has appointed a new Cabinet filled with ruling party members and military officials but no opposition politicians. The 22-member Cabinet includes Maj. Gen. Sibusiso Moyo as foreign minister and Chris Mutsvangwa, leader of Zimbabwe’s war veterans, as information minister. Moyo on Nov. 15 announced the military takeover that led 93-year-old Robert Mugabe to step down as president. Opposition officials and activists condemned the new appointments. Human rights activist Doug Coltart on Twitter said the Cabinet “does not represent a new Zimbabwe, but the entrenchment of the old failed political elite.”
