New Zealand cyclone kills four, displaces thousands
Rescue helicopters by Wednesday had rescued around 300 people from rooftops in northern New Zealand after a cyclone displaced more than 10,000 people across the country. One of the four who died was a child who was likely caught in rising water. Many other people remain missing, some of whom are a “grave concern,” Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said. It’s unclear how many people are missing because communication networks are down.
How are emergency crews responding? More than 140,000 people are without power on one of New Zealand’s northern islands. They are being asked to conserve water and food. In one town on the island, emergency responders plan to hold a barbecue on Wednesday night for at least 3,000 people. They plan to keep cooking until they run out of food or run out of hungry people, Hipkins said. Meanwhile, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand’s capital on Wednesday. No damage has been reported from the earthquake.
