New rules restrict travel from United States to Cuba

The White House has fleshed out a more restrictive economic policy toward Cuba as promised by President Donald Trump earlier this year. New rules that go into effect Thursday limit the ways Americans can travel to Cuba and where they can spend money while there. The Trump administration wants to steer U.S. dollars away from the Cuban government and military and toward private business. Americans can still travel on educational and “people to people” trips, but they must have a daylong schedule of activities designed to support the Cuban people. Cruise ship visits and direct commercial flights between the countries are still allowed, and embassies in Washington, D.C., and Havana will stay open.
