New French leader is youngest, first homosexual prime minister

French President Emmanuel Macron appointed 34-year-old Gabriel Attal on Tuesday, the day after former Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne stepped down. Borne shared her confidence in Attal’s leadership during a handover ceremony, extolling his “determination and energy.” Attal previously served as Macron’s education minister and is both the youngest and first openly homosexual prime minister in French history.

What are Attal’s politics? During Tuesday’s handover event, he said he prioritizes security and immigration control. He also shared his intention to strengthen public services for healthcare and education, specifically schools.
