Storm Henri batters the Northeast
Henri weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm Sunday hours before making landfall on the coast of Rhode Island. The storm slowly moved across the Northeast, unleashing downpours and fierce winds that knocked out power to more than 140,000 homes, swamped roads, stranded people in their vehicles, and closed bridges.
What's next for Henri? The heavy, sustained rains may lead to flooding as Henri stalls over the region. It will then pivot to the East and move out to the Atlantic Ocean on Monday night. President Joe Biden has declared disasters in the states affected, promising to provide federal aid. Several major bridges in Rhode Island, which stitch together much of the state, were briefly shuttered Sunday, and some coastal roads were nearly impassable.
