Four law enforcement members die, several officers wounded after Charlotte shootings
Three law enforcement members died and five other law enforcement officers suffered injuries in the shooting, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Chief Johnny Jennings said in a news conference Monday evening. Four of the wounded were CMPD police officers, and the other worked for another law enforcement agency, according to a written statement by the department. A fourth member of law enforcement died in the hospital later Monday night from his injuries.
What exactly happened? Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were in the area of the 5000 block of Galway Drive in Charlotte, N.C., at around 1:30 p.m. Monday to serve a warrant, Jennings said. While they were approaching the residence, a suspect opened fire on them. Officers returned fire and shot the suspect outside the residence. Authorities later declared that the suspect was dead at the scene.
As officers were approaching the body of the fallen shooter, the officers found themselves under additional gunfire coming from inside the residence. After a lengthy standoff, officers took two people inside the residence into custody and cleared the scene. Jennings said the two people taken from inside the residence were held as persons of interest.
