More women sue Baylor over rape cases
Three more women filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Baylor University on Wednesday, saying the school did not help them after they reported being sexually assaulted on or near campus. The lawsuit states the women were attacked by fellow students—one of them a football player—in 2004, 2013, and 2014. The Baptist school in Waco, Texas, has come under intense criticism for mishandling sexual assault cases, especially those involving athletes. In recent weeks, the Board of Regents demoted university president and chancellor Ken Starr and fired head football coach Art Briles. The women who filed suit said they reported their attacks to campus police, physicians, student advocacy officials, a chaplain, a professor, an assistant dean, and a dorm director, and got little or no assistance. Administrators are trying to settle with another woman who filed the first federal lawsuit against the school.
