More tests ordered for Charlie Gard
The U.S. doctor who flew to London to examine Charlie Gard spent five hours with the critically ill infant before flying back to New York. Gard’s mother, Connie Yates, told reporters Tuesday her son would undergo more tests in the coming days. Dr. Michio Hirano will present his findings to the U.K. high court next week. Judge Nicholas Francis will decide whether to allow Charlie to fly to the United States for treatment. He previously sided with Charlie’s doctors at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital, who wanted to remove his life support. Based on Francis’ ruling, British officials refused to allow Charlie to leave the country. Before traveling to London, Hirano told Francis he believed his treatment could improve Charlie’s condition. The 11-month-old suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome, which has left him unable to breathe on his own. As part of his examination, Hirano requested a new MRI and a 30-minute EEG, which monitors brain activity. Yates told reporters she and Charlie’s father, Chris Gard, are convinced he’s not suffering or in any pain: “As Charlie’s loving parents we are doing the right thing for our son in exploring all treatment options.”
