Migrant boat sinking kills at least 64
At least 64 people died Saturday after a rubber dinghy sank in the Mediterranean Sea off the Libyan coast. The Italian coast guard said an anti-smuggling patrol aircraft spotted the dinghy struggling to stay afloat after something punctured it. Flavio Di Giacomo with the International Organization for Migration said some of the survivors told rescuers that about 150 people boarded the overcrowded dinghy before it took off from Tripoli, Libya’s capital. Italian navy and coast guard vessels rescued 86 people but failed to find any more survivors after launching a search. About 171,802 migrants arrived in Europe by sea in 2017, with the majority coming through Italy.
