Midday Roundup: Site hack busts adulterers in Washington, Duggar family

Open secret. Josh Duggar has admitted to having an account on the adultery website Ashley Madison and to cheating on his wife. News outlets identified Duggar as an Ashley Madison user from data released by a group of hackers that infiltrated the site. In a confession posted on the Duggar family’s website, which was later edited, the 27-year-old admitted to viewing pornography, having a “secret addiction,” and being unfaithful to his wife, Anna. Josh and Anna just had their fourth child one month ago. His parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, stars of the now-canceled reality show 19 Kids and Counting, released a statement saying, “When we learned of this late last night our hearts were broken. As we continue to place our trust in God we ask for your prayers for Josh, Anna, our grandchildren, and our entire family.”

Dot-gov drama. In addition to releasing the personal information of more than 30 million private citizens, the Ashley Madison hackers revealed 15,000 government emails associated with accounts. Email addresses listed were registered to the White House and top federal agencies, including the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security, the House, and the Senate. Based on the leaked data, the nation’s capital has the highest rate of membership in the country. But the company reportedly does not check the validity of account-holder email addresses, so some government addresses might be fake.

Innocent victim. Police are hunting for the person who fired a bullet into the Ferguson, Mo., home of 9-year-old Jamyla Bolden, killing her. Jamyla was doing homework on her mother’s bed Tuesday night when someone opened fire on her house. The shooting took place not far from Canfield Drive, where a police officer last summer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown after the 18-year-old allegedly attacked him. More than 200 people attended a vigil for Jamyla on Thursday night.

Protest push. The Pro-Life Action League has planned protests at more than 300 Planned Parenthood facilities around the country on Saturday. The protests come as a seventh video released from The Center for Medical Progress exposes Planned Parenthood workers negotiating sale of fetal remains and taking parts from a baby with a beating heart. “In Planned Parenthood’s almost 100 years of existence, they’ve never seen this kind of pushback,” said Eric Scheidler, national director of the Pro-Life Action League.

Trust issues. Iran can conduct its own inspections of its nuclear sites under a secret side deal with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The IAEA issued a statement claiming media reports about the deal were misleading. But the agency reaffirmed the confidential nature of the agreement about how it would ensure Iran’s compliance with the international nuclear compromise. The Obama administration downplayed the report. “IAEA will have the access they need to sites that they need to get to, including military sites, in keeping with the agreement, the parameters of this deal,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said. This weekend, the United Kingdom will reopen its embassy in Tehran, re-establishing full diplomatic ties with Iran for the first time in four years.
