Midday Roundup: Obama warns GOP as budget battle looms

White House warning. On the fifth anniversary of the 2008 financial collapse, President Barack Obama warned Republicans not to disrupt the economy by continuing to oppose Obamacare as federal budget deadlines quickly approach. “Budget battles and debates, those are as old as the Republic,” Obama said, adding, “I cannot remember a time when one faction of one party promises economic chaos if it can’t get 100 percent of what it wants.” As is his usual practice, the president made his announcement with a friendly group of what the White House called “small-business owners, construction workers, homeowners, consumers and tax cut recipients” standing behind him.

Rain hinders rescue. Rain continues to fall in flood-ravaged Colorado, so much so that National Guard rescue helicopters have been grounded until the weather clears. Meanwhile, hundreds of residents in Lyons, Jamestown, and other mountain towns remain cut off by floodwaters.

Superbugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the overuse of antibiotics has led to three forms of bacteria that represent an “urgent” threat in the United States. CDC director Tom Frieden said, “It’s not too late” to respond top these “superbugs” but that Americans need to reserve the use of antibiotics for when they are truly needed.

Here she comes. Last night in Atlantic City, N.J., Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, became the first Indian-American selected as Miss America. The 24-year-old from Syracuse, who performed a Bollywood fusion dance during the talent competition, said she hopes to become a doctor, like her dad, who is an obstetrician. Davuluri’s win was overshadowed by negative comments about her ethnicity on social media. “I have to rise above that,” she said. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”
